The Toyota 4Runner is the ultimate overlanding and off-road SUV — and a dash cam is essential gear for trail documentation, trailhead security, and insurance protection. Whether you have the massively popular 5th gen (2019–2024) or the all-new 6th gen (2025+), there's a Dongar adapter that fits your 4Runner. Multiple connection points, trim-specific options, and the cleanest dash cam install you can get — no hardwiring, no fuse taps, no tools.

Why 4Runner owners love dash cams: Trail documentation for trip reports, security footage at remote trailheads, insurance evidence for rock chips and trail incidents, and peace of mind on long overlanding trips. Dongar's plug & play adapters mean you don't sacrifice a 12V outlet that you need for your fridge, compressor, or other trail gear.

Which Adapter Fits Your 4Runner?

6th Gen 4Runner (2025+)

The all-new 6th gen 4Runner has up to three connection points depending on your trim. The DCA-5A domelight connector is standard on all trims and is the recommended starting point. The autodimming mirror is optional on most trims — if yours has it, you can run two Dongar adapters simultaneously.

Trim Mirror (DCA-10B) Domelight (DCA-5A) TSS 3.0 (DCA-16T) PRO / PRO+
TRD Pro ✓ (5A recommended)
Trailhunter ✓ (5A recommended)
TRD Off-Road If equipped ✓ (5A recommended)
TRD Off-Road Premium ✓ (5A recommended)
Limited ✓ (5A recommended)
Platinum ✓ (5A recommended)
SR5 If equipped ✓ (5A recommended)
DCA-5A is the go-to for 6th gen. The domelight connector is standard on all 2025+ 4Runner trims, making the DCA-5A the simplest and most universal option. If your 4Runner also has the autodimming mirror, you get even more flexibility with the DCA-10B as a second connection point.
Two adapters at once? On 6th gen trims with an autodimming mirror, you can run a Dongar on the 10-pin mirror AND the 5-pin domelight simultaneously — they're on different fuses. Perfect for powering a dash cam and a radar detector separately.

5th Gen 4Runner (2019–2024)

Configuration Adapter Connection PRO Compatible?
With auto-dimming mirror (all trims 2020+) DCA-10B (10-Pin Type B) Underneath plastic mirror shroud No — 5th gen chassis lacks constant power to this connector
With TSS 2.5 DCA-12T (12-Pin Type T) TSS lane-trace computer No — Classic only
Economy mirror (2019 some trims) DCA-7B (7-Pin Type B) Back of mirror No
5th gen is the most popular 4Runner on the road. If you have a 2020+ 4Runner with an auto-dimming mirror, the DCA-10B is your go-to adapter. It's the same adapter used in the Tacoma, Tundra, and dozens of other Toyota vehicles — battle-tested by thousands of owners.

Connection Points Explained

Rearview Mirror

DCA-10B (6th gen + 5th gen) • DCA-7B (2019 economy)

Plugs into the auto-dimming mirror connector underneath the plastic mirror shroud. USB output mounts on the windshield near the mirror — easy to access and disconnect. The most common install across all 4Runner generations.

Domelight Cavity

DCA-5A (6th gen)

Plugs into the pre-provisioned OEM dashcam connector inside the overhead console. This is the same port Toyota uses for their dealer-installed dashcam. Lives entirely hidden in the ceiling. Driver's side.

TSS Computer

DCA-16T (TSS 3.0, 6th gen) • DCA-12T (TSS 2.5, 5th gen)

Shares power from the Toyota Safety Sense lane-trace assist computer near the mirror base. Does NOT connect to the mirror itself. Works even on trims without an auto-dimming mirror.

Don't confuse the connectors! Behind the mirror shroud, you'll see both the mirror connector (10-pin) and the TSS computer connector (12-pin or 16-pin). They look similar but are different products for different connectors. The DCA-10B pamphlet warns: "Most Toyotas have a 12-Pin Safety Sense Connector that can easily be confused with your rearview mirror connection: DO NOT UNPLUG THIS." Use the Compatibility Finder to confirm which adapter you need.

How to Install

Mirror Install (DCA-10B / DCA-7B)

  1. Tilt your rearview mirror down and remove the plastic shroud/cover
  2. Locate the mirror connector (10-pin on most trims) — NOT the nearby TSS connector
  3. Unplug the mirror harness
  4. Plug the Dongar adapter inline between the harness and mirror
  5. Route the USB-C cable behind the headliner to your dash cam
  6. Replace the shroud — done

Domelight Install (DCA-5A) — 6th Gen

  1. Pull the overhead console / domelight assembly straight down (requires firm force — it clips in with 2–4 red clips)
  2. Locate the white 5-pin connector on the driver's side, usually taped up from the factory
  3. Plug the Dongar adapter into the connector
  4. Route the USB-C cable to your dash cam
  5. Push the domelight assembly back into place — done
Pro tip: The 5-pin domelight connector is the same one Toyota uses for their dealer-installed OEM dashcam accessory. It's on its own dedicated fuse, making it the safest option from a dealer-warranty perspective. On the 6th gen 4Runner, it uses the same Harness 5A as the Tacoma.

Parking Mode

Want your dash cam recording while your 4Runner is parked at the trailhead or in the lot? You have options:

A word about parking mode: It sounds great on paper — your dash cam watches your car 24/7. In reality, memory cards fill up quickly with motion-triggered clips (especially in busy parking lots), and most front-only or front+rear cameras won't capture a side-impact hit-and-run anyway. Repeated charge/discharge cycles can also wear on your vehicle battery over time. That said, if you do want parking mode, the Dongar approach gives you more flexibility than generic hardwire kits — easy install, easy removal, and built-in voltage cutoff to protect your battery. That's why we invented these products: to give you more options, not fewer.

Dongar PRO PMA-01

3-position switch:
• IGN — on with engine only
• Timed — 4 hours after parking
• Continuous — up to 36 hrs, 11.8V cutoff

Includes 5A + 5C + 10B harnesses in one box. Use Harness 5A for 6th gen 4Runner domelight.

Dongar PRO+ PRS-01

OLED display + one-button menu:
• Custom voltage cutoff (0.01V precision)
• Custom timer (hrs + mins, default 8hr)
• Energy Budget mode (Eco/Normal/Heavy)
• 5V always-on + Parking Mode CC for Viofo/RedTiger

Same harnesses as PRO. Swap module & mount if upgrading.

Using a Viofo or RedTiger dash cam? These cameras have non-standard USB-C implementations. The Dongar PRO+ has dedicated "5V Output Always-On" and "Parking Mode CC" settings that bypass the USB-C handshake, letting these cameras properly enter and exit parking mode. The PRO will keep them recording continuously, but they won't enter their low-power standby state.

What 4Runner Owners Are Saying

I got the Garmin Mini 3, and the Dongar Mirror Connector. It's super easy. The Tacoma was like a 10 minute install.

I also just installed the Dongar adapter in our 23 TRD Pro. Real easy to install, I don't have any need for video recording while the car isn't running or parked unattended. Used a Garmin Mini 3.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Dongar adapter fits my 4Runner?

It depends on your generation. 6th gen (2025+): DCA-10B (mirror), DCA-5A (domelight), or DCA-16T (TSS 3.0 computer) — all trims supported. 5th gen (2019–2024): DCA-10B (auto-dimming mirror, most common), DCA-12T (TSS 2.5 computer), or DCA-7B (economy mirror on some 2019 trims). Use the Compatibility Finder to confirm.

Does the 6th gen 4Runner support parking mode?

Yes. The Dongar PRO and PRO+ both support parking mode on the 6th gen 4Runner. Use Harness 5A (domelight) for the cleanest install — it's the same setup as the 4th gen Tacoma. The PRO+ adds custom timers, voltage cutoffs, and energy budgets for maximum control over how long your dash cam records while parked.

Can I run two adapters at the same time on my 4Runner?

Yes, on 6th gen trims with an autodimming mirror. Use one Dongar on the 10-pin mirror and another on the 5-pin domelight — they're on different fuses. Perfect for powering a dash cam and a radar detector separately. For RJ11 radar detectors (Uniden, Escort, Valentine), pair with the USB-C to RJ11 converter cable.

What about the 5th gen with no autodimming mirror?

If your 2019 4Runner has the economy mirror (no auto-dimming), the DCA-7B plugs into the 7-pin connector underneath the plastic mirror shroud. Alternatively, the DCA-12T taps into the TSS 2.5 lane-trace computer regardless of which mirror you have — it's completely independent of the mirror type.

Will the Dongar work with my Garmin Mini / Viofo dash cam?

Yes. The Dongar outputs true 18W USB-C (5V/9V/12V) and works with virtually all USB-C powered dash cams. Garmin Mini 2/Mini 3 work great with both Classic and PRO/PRO+. Viofo and RedTiger cameras have non-standard USB-C — for proper parking mode detection, the PRO+ is recommended (it has dedicated 5V always-on + Parking Mode CC settings).

Is the 4Runner good for overlanding with a dash cam?

The 4Runner is one of the most popular overlanding vehicles on the road, and a dash cam is essential trail gear. Use it for trail documentation and trip reports, security footage at remote trailheads, insurance evidence for rock chips and trail incidents, and peace of mind on long trips. Dongar's plug & play install means you don't sacrifice a 12V outlet that you need for your fridge, compressor, or other off-road accessories.
