Toyota Tacoma Dash Cam Adapter — Compatibility & Installation Guide
Toyota Tacoma Dash Cam Adapter
The Toyota Tacoma is one of the most popular vehicles in the Dongar lineup — and for good reason. Whether you have a 3rd gen (2016–2023) or the new 4th gen (2024+), there’s a Dongar adapter that fits your truck. Multiple connection points, trim-specific options, and the cleanest dash cam install you can get.
Which Adapter Fits Your Tacoma?
4th Gen Tacoma (2024+)
The 4th gen has up to three connection points depending on your trim. You can even run two Dongar adapters simultaneously on TRD/Trailhunter/Limited trims.

Three Connection Points Explained
🔌 Rearview Mirror
Plugs into the auto-dimming mirror connector underneath the plastic mirror shroud. USB output mounts on the windshield near the mirror — easy to access and disconnect.
💡 Domelight Cavity
Plugs into the pre-provisioned OEM dashcam connector inside the overhead console. This is the same port Toyota uses for their dealer-installed dashcam. Lives entirely hidden in the ceiling. Driver’s side.
🛡️ TSS Computer
Shares power from the Toyota Safety Sense lane-trace assist computer near the mirror base. Does NOT connect to the mirror itself. Works even on base trims without an auto-dimming mirror.
How to Install
Mirror Install — DCA-10B (10-pin, behind shroud)
- Tilt your rearview mirror down and remove the plastic shroud/cover
- Locate the 10-pin mirror connector — NOT the nearby TSS connector
- Unplug the mirror harness
- Plug the DCA-10B adapter inline between the harness and mirror
- Route the USB-C cable behind the headliner to your dash cam
- Replace the shroud — done
Mirror Install — DCA-12A (12-pin, back of mirror)
- Tilt your rearview mirror down — the 12-pin connector is accessible at the back of the mirror, no shroud removal required
- Pull the connector out toward the front of the vehicle to disconnect the mirror harness
- Plug the DCA-12A adapter inline between the harness and mirror
- Push the connection back into place
- Route the USB-C cable behind the headliner to your dash cam — done
Domelight Install (DCA-5A)
- Pull the overhead console / domelight assembly straight down (requires firm force — it clips in with 2–4 red clips)
- Locate the white 5-pin connector on the driver’s side, usually taped up from the factory
- Plug the Dongar adapter into the connector
- Route the USB-C cable to your dash cam
- Push the domelight assembly back into place — done

Same harnesses as PRO. Swap module & mount if upgrading.
Dongar vs. Copycat Adapters
Products from Mangoal, FitDVR, and other Amazon sellers may look similar to Dongar adapters, but there are critical differences under the hood.
| Feature | Dongar | Mangoal / FitDVR |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C Output | True 5V/9V/12V Power Delivery (18W) | 5V only — not true USB-C PD |
| Connector Quality | OEM-grade connectors matching factory spec | Generic aftermarket connectors |
| Engineering | Designed by engineers in USA & Europe with vehicle-specific R&D | Generic designs, often reverse-engineered copies |
| Parking Mode Option | Dongar PRO & PRO+ with low-voltage cutoff, OLED display, customizable settings | No parking mode products available |
| Dash Cam Compatibility | Works with Viofo, Garmin, RedTiger, etc. — PRO+ has CC pin control for non-standard USB-C cameras | Limited to basic 5V cameras only |
| Vehicle-Specific Harnesses | Harnesses engineered around each vehicle’s exact wiring — no guesswork | One-size-fits-all approach |
| Safety Protections | Built-in over-current & over-voltage protection, fuse-matched to vehicle circuit | Minimal or undocumented protections |
| Support & Warranty | US-based support, 3-year warranty, install pamphlets for every vehicle | Limited support, often overseas-only |
| Cable Visibility | Hidden behind plastic shroud or headliner | Similar routing, but bulkier connectors |
What Tacoma Owners Are Saying
I hardwired it using a Dongar mirror power adapter, so it pulls ignition power cleanly from the [mirror harness]… full install + trail tested this weekend.
As advertised… Bought this to integrate a dashcam into the OEM system on a 2024 Tacoma. It was plug and play into the digital rear view mirror. Worked great. Easy install, no unsightly wiring hanging off the camera.
I got the Garmin Mini 3, and the Dongar Mirror Connector. It’s super easy. The Tacoma was like a 10 minute install.
I love the Dongar. After years of dumb cigarette lighter cables that are impractical to run from a center console up to the windshield, the Dongar makes it really easy.
After a bunch of research, I finally decided on the Viofo A229 Ultra 2-channel with the Dongar classic harness to power the camera from the rear view mirror.
I bought a VIOFO A229 Plus. And yes, using the 10 pin Dongar adapter to steal power from the rear view mirror. Auto powers up and down and can use battery power when parked.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Dongar adapter do I need for my Tacoma?
It depends on your generation and trim. 4th gen (2024+) TRD/Limited/Trailhunter: DCA-10B (mirror), DCA-5A (domelight), or DCA-16T (TSS computer). 4th gen SR/SR5 without auto-dimming mirror: DCA-5A or DCA-16T. 3rd gen (2016–2023): DCA-12A (mirror) or DCA-12T (TSS 2.5 computer). Use the Compatibility Finder to confirm.
What’s the difference between the 5-pin and 10-pin adapter?
The 5-pin (DCA-5A) plugs into the OEM dashcam connector inside the domelight/overhead console cavity. It lives entirely hidden in the ceiling. The 10-pin (DCA-10B) taps into the auto-dimming rearview mirror connector. The USB output mounts on the windshield near the mirror, making it slightly easier to access and disconnect. Both provide the same 18W USB-C power. For the Dongar PRO, all harnesses come in one box — you choose which to use.
I have an SR or SR5 with no auto-dimming mirror. Can I still use Dongar?
Yes. The DCA-5A plugs into the OEM dashcam connector in the domelight cavity — present on most 2024+ Tacomas regardless of trim. The DCA-16T taps into the TSS 3.0 lane-trace computer, which is also independent of your mirror type. You don’t need an auto-dimming mirror for either of these.
Why can’t I just hardwire to the fuse box on the 4th gen Tacoma?
Toyota placed two plastic covers over the 4th gen Tacoma’s fuse box. Using a traditional add-a-fuse / hardwire kit means you either cut the covers or leave them off permanently. Dongar’s plug & play adapters bypass the fuse box entirely — no cutting, no tools, and everything hides behind the mirror or inside the domelight. If you still prefer a fuse box approach, the Dongar PRO Fusebox Kit (PMA-04) and PRO+ Fusebox Kit (PRS-04) give you Dongar’s parking mode intelligence with a traditional hardwire install.
What’s the difference between DCA-12A and DCA-12T?
Despite the similar names, these are completely different products. The DCA-12A plugs into the older 12-pin connector at the underneath plastic mirror shroud (3rd gen Tacoma, 2016–2023). The DCA-12T plugs into the TSS 2.5 lane-trace assist computer — a separate module near the mirror base behind the plastic shroud. Different hardware, different pinout. They are NOT interchangeable.
Will the Dongar PRO work with my Viofo / Garmin / BlackVue dash cam?
The Dongar PRO outputs true 18W USB-C (5V/9V/12V) and works with virtually all USB-C powered dash cams. Garmin Mini 2/Mini 3 work great with both PRO and PRO+. Viofo and RedTiger cameras have non-standard USB-C — the PRO will keep them recording, but for proper parking mode detection, the PRO+ is recommended (it has dedicated 5V always-on + Parking Mode CC settings to bypass the handshake). BlackVue and Thinkware use DC barrel plugs — special cables are in development.
Does the Tacoma Hybrid work differently with Dongar PRO for parking mode?
The hybrid Tacoma doesn’t use the 12V battery to start the engine — the 288V hybrid system handles that. So the 12V battery can tolerate more drain for dash cam parking mode without risk of being unable to start. The Dongar PRO’s low-voltage cutoff protection provides a safety net either way.
Can I power both a dash cam and a radar detector?
Yes. On trims with both connections available, use one Dongar on the 10-pin mirror for the dash cam and another on the 5-pin domelight for the radar detector (or vice versa). They’re on different fuses. For RJ11 radar detectors (Uniden, Escort, Valentine), pair with the USB-C to RJ11 converter cable.
Is 4 hours enough for timed parking mode?
On the Dongar PRO, the 4-hour timed mode is conservative/safe. For longer sessions, use continuous mode — tested all day/night on a gas-only Tacoma with no starting issues. The Dongar PRO+ solves this directly with a fully customizable timer (hour + minute granularity, default 8 hours) plus an Energy Budget mode that powers the cam until a set energy amount is consumed.
