Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Dongar adapter and how does it work?
A Dongar adapter is a plug-and-play power tap that connects to your vehicle's rearview mirror wiring harness. It outputs 5V, 9V, or 12V via USB-C — covering the vast majority of dash cams on the market. Power is ignition-switched, meaning it turns on with your vehicle and off when you park. No wire cutting, no fuse taps, and no permanent modifications to your vehicle.
Will the adapter affect my mirror's features (auto-dimming, HomeLink, rain sensor)?
No. The adapter passes through all mirror signals untouched. Your auto-dimming, HomeLink garage door opener, rain sensor, and any other mirror features will continue to work exactly as before. The adapter simply adds a power output for your dash cam.
How do I know which adapter fits my vehicle?
Use the compatibility finder above — select your dash cam or radar detector and your vehicle's year, make, and model. The tool will show you the exact adapter SKU, along with any notes about trim-level differences or connector variations. If your vehicle isn't listed, our universal fusebox hardwire kits work with any vehicle that has a standard fuse box.
Does my vehicle's trim level matter?
In some cases, yes. Certain trims — especially those with rain sensors or light sensors integrated into the mirror — use a different connector than the base model. Our finder flags these cases and shows you which adapter matches each trim configuration.
Can the adapter drain my battery?
No. Dongar mirror-tap adapters are ignition-switched, meaning they only provide power when the vehicle is running. When you turn off your vehicle, the adapter cuts power to your dash cam. This is by design — there is no constant-on power draw that could drain your battery.
What if I need parking mode for my dash cam?
Mirror-tap adapters are ignition-switched and don't support parking mode recording. If you need your dash cam to record while parked, choose one of our Dongar PRO or PRO+ universal fusebox hardwire kits. These connect to your vehicle's fuse box and include voltage cutoff protection to prevent battery drain while keeping your cam recording overnight.
How long does installation take?
Most installations take under 5 minutes. You unplug your mirror's existing connector, plug in the Dongar adapter (it sits in-line between the mirror and the vehicle harness), then route your dash cam's power cable along the headliner. Some vehicles may require removing a small plastic shroud to access the connector, which adds a few minutes.
My vehicle isn't in the database — what are my options?
We're constantly expanding our compatibility database. If your vehicle isn't listed, you have two options: our universal two-prong friction-fit adapters (which work with most mirror connectors), or our fusebox hardwire kits (which bypass the mirror entirely and connect directly to your fuse box). Both options are shown in the finder when no vehicle-specific adapter is available.
My dash cam isn't listed — will it still work?
Most likely, yes. The devices shown in the finder are popular models we've specifically tested, but our adapters output standard USB-C power at 5V, 9V, or 12V — which covers the vast majority of dash cams on the market. If your camera charges via USB-C or USB-A, it will work with a Dongar adapter. The only fringe cases are devices that require RJ11 or DC barrel plug connections, which may need a separate adapter cable.
What power output do Dongar adapters provide?
Our adapters provide USB-C output with support for 5V, 9V, and 12V — automatically matching what your dash cam requests. This covers virtually every USB-powered dash cam, radar detector, and GPS device available today. For devices that use Mini-USB or Micro-USB, we include the appropriate cable with the adapter.
What are the different ways to power a dash cam?
There are four main methods: Rearview mirror tap (our most popular — plugs into your auto-dimming mirror's existing wiring for a clean, hidden install), roof connector tap (available on 2023+ Toyota Tundra, Sequoia, BZ4X, and 2024+ Tacoma which come pre-wired with a 12V power line in the domelight cavity), fuse box hardwire kit (universal option that works with any vehicle — best for parking mode recording), and cigarette lighter plug (simplest but leaves a visible cable across your dash). Our finder tool above helps you determine which method is best for your vehicle.
Can I power a dash cam from my rearview mirror?
Yes — if your vehicle has an auto-dimming mirror. Look for features like garage door buttons (HomeLink), LED indicator lights, or an electrochromic dimming function. If your mirror only has a manual flip-tab, it's likely not powered. Our adapters tap into the mirror's existing fuse-protected power circuit and add a USB port in parallel, with built-in overvoltage and overcurrent protection. The connector is usually accessible right behind the mirror, though some vehicles have it hidden under a plastic shroud.
What if my vehicle doesn't have an auto-dimming mirror?
No problem. Our universal fusebox hardwire kits work with any vehicle that has a standard fuse box. These kits use an add-a-fuse tap and include voltage cutoff protection. They're also the best option if you need parking mode recording, since fuse box kits can provide constant power even when the vehicle is off. Check out our Powering Your Dash Cam guide for a full comparison of all power methods.
My vehicle has a roof connector (2023+ Toyota/Lexus) — can I use that?
Yes! Starting with the 2023 model year, Toyota includes a 12V power line in the domelight cavity — originally intended for Toyota's own dash cam option (which retails for $315+ at the dealer). Our 5-pin Type A adapter uses this same connector and lets you install your own USB-powered dash cam at a fraction of the cost. This is compatible with all 2023+ Tundra, BZ4X, Sequoia, and 2024+ Tacoma models.
How does Dongar compare to FitDVR or Mangoal adapters?
Dongar Technologies invented the rearview mirror dash cam power adapter category and remains the industry leader. We're a US-based company with engineering done in both the US and EU — not a reseller of generic overseas components. Here's how we compare to alternatives like FitDVR and Mangoal: Voltage support: Dongar adapters output 5V, 9V, and 12V via USB-C — essential for premium dash cams like BlackVue and Thinkware that require 12V. FitDVR supports 5V and 12V, while Mangoal currently only outputs 5V/2A, which limits compatibility with higher-end cameras. Parking mode: Dongar offers dedicated PRO and PRO+ fusebox hardwire kits with voltage cutoff protection for parking mode recording — neither FitDVR nor Mangoal offer an equivalent. Vehicle coverage: Dongar's compatibility database spans 340+ vehicle-specific configurations with OEM-grade connectors engineered for each platform. Design: Some competitors offer features like an LED voltage display, but Dongar prioritizes a compact, hidden form factor that tucks behind the mirror housing for a factory-look installation.
Are Dongar adapters compatible with dash cams from other brands' adapters (FitDVR, Mangoal)?
Dongar adapters are designed to work with any USB-powered dash cam — regardless of where you bought it or what brand adapter it may have come bundled with. If you're switching from a FitDVR or Mangoal setup, or replacing a cigarette lighter cable with a cleaner mirror-tap solution, any dash cam that charges via USB will work. The advantage of Dongar's multi-voltage output (5V/9V/12V) is that it covers cameras that require higher voltages, which some competing adapters can't provide.
